The bottom part of antenna are white.

Walking legs
Outer surface of propodus of left 3rd walking leg not flat, slightly swollen in midline.

Yellow brown marks on joints of walking legs, longitudinal yellow brown streak on surface of walking legs on some individuals.

Outer surface of propodus of left 3rd walking leg separated from dorsal surface by a well-marked longitudinal crest(B).

Abdomen
The abdomen is short.

Male coxae of 5th legs

Remark

1. It is quite difficult to identify the species of Coenobita purpureus and Coenobita rugosus for some small individuals or white colour adult individuals, but for most individuals it was possible to determine by means of the existence of a black band on the lower surfaces of the eyestalks, outer surface of propodus of 3rd walking leg and male coxae of 5th legs.

2. Generally, Coenobita rugosus with bushy and more obvious granules (on outer surface of left cheliped) than Coenobita purpureus.

Coenobita purpureus with yellow brown to red purple marks near dactylus and fixed finger of left cheliped, but Coenobita rugosus WITHOUT.

2. Coenobita lila was treated as Coenobita purpureus before.
